How Crude!

Have your ever seen it? Hemp crude oil that is. Unless you’ve seen it elsewhere or on the all knowing world wide web, we’ve never shown you, and we thought that was quite “crude”! With that said, we’ve cracked the drum open to give you an up-close look at exactly what hemp crude oil actually is.

BEFORE CRUDE OIL

Following harvest, hemp plants are hung to dry, and once removed from hanging nets, they are shucked and trimmed, meaning all of the plants’ buds are removed from the stalks. The buds are then sent through a bucking machine that removes any remaining leaves and stems. Now, they are ready for CBD extraction.

WHAT CRUDE OIL IS

During the process of extraction, CBD is extracted from the buds or flowers on the hemp plant. After extraction, CBD oil will go through a refinement process prior to product manufacturing. Before refinement, while still containing some plant matter, this oil is considered hemp crude oil.

WHAT CRUDE OIL LOOKS LIKE

It is usually dark brown to black in color with some hints of dark green and has a tar-like consistency. This is evident in these images from our personal drums of crude oil in our processing barn.

AFTER CRUDE OIL

Typically, when using CBD for products such as tinctures and gummies, crude oil is then refined or made into what is called distillate in either full-spectrum or broad-spectrum oil, or CBD Isolate, which is pure CBD.
