National Hemp Month - Explore Hemp's History
PAST
As we celebrate National Hemp Month, it's important to reflect on the remarkable journey of hemp, a plant that has woven itself into the fabric of human history. Hemp's popularity dates back thousands of years, revered for its versatility and strength. In early America, it was a staple crop, utilized for making everything from ropes and sails to paper and clothing.
However, hemp was pushed off the pedestal in the 20th century under the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Hemp, marijuana, and any kind of cannabis were thrown into the same pot and banned for decades confining hemp’s cultivation and blocking all its benefits to human health. Before getting better, things got worse in 1970 when hemp was again unrightfully considered the same plant as marijuana and categorized as a Schedule 1 substance under The Controlled Substance Act.
Fast forward 54 years to the passing of the Farm Bill of 2018. This is when hemp could finally begin its comeback although it would be slow. This bill re-legalized the cultivation of hemp recognizing its potential benefits for health, industry, and the environment. CVF stamps the timeline in 2020 by growing the 1st hemp plant in Ohio!
PRESENT
health and away from so many pharmaceuticals.
FUTURE
Since legalization of recreational marijuana in November of 2023, dispensary licensing rules have been in progress allowing existing medical marijuana dispensaries to obtain a dual-use license to be able to sell non-medical cannabis as well. While rules continue to be finalized, Ohio’s recreational marijuana program must be fully implemented by Sept. 7th.
As far as CVF’s future plan, for now we are staying on the path of hemp and forever on the journey of natural wellness.
